Sloped yards are tricky. Most homeowners just live with them - mowing around an awkward grade, watching the space go unused, never quite figuring out how to make it work. That's exactly what we were dealing with here. A yard that had real potential but no functional layout to actually enjoy it.

The solution was a full landscape design that worked with the slope instead of fighting it. We built out multiple terraced levels using stacked stone retaining walls, which gave us the structure to carve out distinct zones - a composite deck for dining and lounging right off the house, a flagstone patio connecting seamlessly to that deck, a flat artificial turf play area in the middle tier, and a play structure perched on the upper level. Each zone has a purpose. Nothing feels wasted.

The composite deck is one of our favorite parts of this build. Dark, clean, low-maintenance - and big enough to fit a full dining set and an outdoor lounge setup without feeling cramped. The stone border detail along the deck edge ties everything together and gives the whole space a finished, intentional look. String lights overhead pull the entire yard together once the sun goes down.

What makes a design like this work isn't just the materials - it's the planning. Getting the terrace heights right, making sure the transitions between levels feel natural, keeping sight lines open so the yard still feels spacious. That's where the design process really earns its keep. When it all comes together, you stop seeing a problem yard and start seeing the backyard your family actually uses.
